Sod Calculator
Enter your lawn area to see how many pallets and pieces of sod to order.
How the calculation works
sod needed = lawn area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
Divide by the square feet per pallet and round up to whole pallets. Many suppliers also sell partial pallets or single pieces, so the result shows pieces too.
Worked example
A 1,200 square foot lawn plus 5% waste needs 1,260 square feet of sod. That's 2.8 pallets of 450 sq ft, so order 3 pallets, or 2 pallets and 135 loose pieces.
Tips
- Lay sod the day it arrives. Sod on a pallet heats up and can die within a day or two in warm weather.
- Prepare the soil first. Loosen the top few inches, remove rocks and roots, and rake level.
- Water deeply right after laying, and keep it moist for about two weeks until the roots take hold.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a pallet of sod cover?
Most pallets cover 400 to 500 square feet, but it depends on the farm and the grass type. Always confirm with your supplier.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
A full pallet usually weighs 1,500 to 3,000 pounds, depending on its size and how wet the sod is. That's too heavy for most pickup trucks, so plan on delivery.
